Classic design french press consists of a narrow cylindrical glass jug, equipped with a lid and a stainless plunger, which fits tightly in the cylinder glass beaker and which has a fine wire mesh acting as a filter. Coffee is brewed by placing the coffee and water together, leaving to brew for a few minutes, then depressing the plunger to trap the coffee grinds at the bottom of the glass jug. A French press equires coffee of a more coarse grind than that used for a drip brew coffee filter, such as produced by a burr mill grinder rather than the whirling blade variety, as a finer grind will seep through the press filter and into the coffee. Because the coffee grounds remain in direct contact with the brewing water and the grinds are filtered from the water via a mesh instead of a paper filter, coffee brewed with the French press captures more of the coffee’s flavour and essential oils, which would become trapped in a traditional drip brew machine’s paper filters. French pressed coffee is usually stronger and thicker and has more sediment than drip-brewed coffee.Elegantly designed in the classic French-press look, this Primula coffeemaker features a domed lid and footed frame in metal with a chrome-like finish, definitely adding class to after-dinner java. The large black handle, made of a heat-resistant synthetic material, enables pouring without burning knuckles on the hot glass. Unlike some presses that use polycarbonate containers, this one (model PCP-6408) has a heavy glass insert that can be removed for easy cleaning, either in a dishwasher or preferably by hand. A three-cup version of the press is also available; both make excellent gifts for the coffee lover.

Many coffee aficionados believe the French-press plunger method of brewing is the best way to bring out the richest flavor of the beans. This coffee press employs that method to brew eight cups of aromatic coffee. To use, simply put medium-to-coarse ground coffee in the bottom of the glass container, add hot (not boiling) water, wait approximately three minutes, and slowly press down the plunger with the stainless-steel mesh filter. All the grounds will be captured below the filter, leaving the coffee ready to pour and enjoy. –Ann Bieri

8 cups of fail Wife bough the pot at the grocery store on sale for $11. The next day, the thing throws a crack while making a half-pot.I looked at it when I got home, and made the following observations:The “stainless” looks suspect. Might be chrome plated mild steel. The band that attaches to the top of the handle contacts the glass in 3 places, with enough space to fit a matchbook cover in about halfway around. I can’t tell you how much force the band is exerting on the glass, except to say that it was apparently enough to cause it to crack. The poor workmanship extends to the feet, which do not sit evenly on the glass. I’m glad the unit cracked up top and not on the bottom.

Good I’ve had this for a few days. So far so good. By 8-cups they mean 8 4oz servings or coffee cups. I think. Holds 32oz, not 64oz which is the official 8 cup measurement. Got it on sale at Macy’s with a coupon for $15. You need a scoop of ground coffe for each 4 oz of water.
